An engineer's computation pad is a specific object: pale green paper, a grid of five squares to the inch, a heavier line every fifth square so the inches read at a glance, and a printed border. The convention comes from pads where the grid was printed on the back of the sheet and showed through faintly, so a drawing could be laid out on the grid and then photocopied without the grid coming with it.
Five squares to the inch is a fifth of an inch, or 5.08 mm — very nearly but not quite the 5 mm of European graph paper. The difference is under two percent, which sounds like nothing until you scale a drawing off it and find every dimension is out by the same two percent. If a US course or a US drawing standard asked for engineering paper, it means the inch-based grid, and that is what this page opens at.

Is engineering paper the same as 5 mm graph paper?
No, though the two are close enough to be confused. Engineering paper is five squares to the inch, which is 5.08 mm. It is about 1.6 percent coarser than 5 mm paper — irrelevant for rough work, and not irrelevant if you are scaling dimensions off the drawing.
Why is engineering paper green?
Because the grid was traditionally printed on the reverse of the sheet in a pale green that showed through faintly, so it guided the drawing without reproducing when the sheet was copied. The colour stuck as a convention long after the reason for it did.
How do I check the grid printed at the right size?
Count five squares and measure: that distance has to be exactly one inch, or 25.4 mm. Five squares is the right test rather than one, because a single 5.08 mm square is too small to tell 5.08 from 5.00 with a ruler.
