A centimetre square is big enough to write a number in, and that single property is why primary and lower-secondary maths runs on it. Counting squares for area, plotting coordinates, drawing a bar chart one square per unit, sketching a room to scale — all of them need the square to hold a digit legibly, and 5 mm does not.

It is also the ruling to reach for when the grid is a measuring tool rather than a writing surface. A floor plan at one centimetre to the metre, a garden bed laid out at one square per foot, a seating plan — anything where you want to count squares across a room and get an answer without a calculator.

The heavy-line setting is off here, because on a centimetre grid the lines are already far enough apart to count and a heavy line every five would just make the sheet busy. Turn it on if you want 5 cm blocks marked for a large plan.

A centimetre grid is also the easiest ruling to sanity-check, because ten squares is a decimetre and any ruler shows that at a glance. If you want 5 cm blocks marked for a large plan, set the heavy line control to every fifth square; it is off here because at this spacing the lines are already countable.
